Buttage
Buttage Defined
Buttage is the tendency to expose part of the buttocks, typically so that the cheeks are partially or fully exposed (JE9024B). The implication is that the subject is not bottomless, and possesses at least fio dental up the posterior rugae.
The controlling fashion line for buttage is almost always the legline, and only when it is very high. Buttage represents an opposite action on the cuotte from rugage, in which the waistline descends from the top.
The exposure code for buttage is A.

Buttage Practice
The most mild form of buttage is cheeking, the accidental or casual exposure of the bottom of the buttocks (RP8812, JE8910A). Cheeking can occur intermittently, as with fabric rolling up in the back of a maillot (AB8301) or a culotte sliding into posterior rugae (VB8425, FL8611, CI8908), as is prone to occur with a string bikini brief. Or cheeking may be a permanent fixture, as with a string (SM8808), v-kini (VB8413, VB8428, RP8809, SM8870), or high-leglined maillot that will never quite cover the full butt, or short shorts (VB8501, MP96H6).
Buttage is always present in the halfback (VB8401, VB8421), and microkini (FL8602,JE8906), and whenever the bikiniite forces the culotte up into the into posterior rugae (RP8802, CI8909). The evolution of this vector of uncovering from the side of the hip is discussed in some detail at the v-kini page. A bikini contest illustrates a late 1980s captures progressive buttage (FL8603, FL8605), and includes the flapped tanga, which graduates exposures dry and wet (FL8604, FL8607), if not with the wind.
With the evolution of the rolldown and the adjustable, buttage becomes an explicit object of play, if only because the bikiniite gets to "dial in" her degree of exposure.
Extreme buttage occures with tanga and g-string, and becomes a battleground of legality during the early 1990s.
